Philadelphia Phillies centerfielder Kenny Lofton was activated from the 15-day disabled list before Friday's interleague series opener against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
The 37-year-old Lofton, who has been sidelined since April 30 with a hamstring injury, is batting .373 with one home run and four RBI in just 18 games for the Phillies this season. He was acquired from the New York Yankees for relief pitcher Felix Rodriguez in a trade during the offseason.
Lofton, who was in Friday's starting lineup as the Phillies' designated hitter, has been battling hamstring problems since spring training.
To make room for Lofton on the active roster, the Phillies designated utility man Jose Offerman for assignment. Offerman, who hit his first home run of the season in Thursday's 7-4 win over St. Louis, was batting just .182 in 33 at-bats for Philadelphia.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies also plan to activate first baseman Jim Thome from the disabled list before Saturday's game in Baltimore.
Thome, who has been out of action since May 1 with a lower back strain, has been playing in extended spring training games in Clearwater, Florida, this week. The slugger was off to a poor start this season, batting just .203 with one homer and 12 RBI in 24 games.
