Halladay expected to miss rest of season

Toronto's Roy Halladay is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a broken left leg. "It's disappointing for sure," Halladay said. "It's just one of those things. There is not a whole lot I can do about it, it just has to take its course. At no time did I ever think, what I was doing was going to make it more painful. It would get better and I would try to work, but the pain would come back." Halladay, who suffered the injury on July 8, was initially expected to miss four-to-six weeks before coming back. It originally appeared that Halladay was on course to return to the rotation as planned when he began throwing a few weeks after the injury, but a recent setback ruined any chances of that. "Our guys have been battling without him the last eight weeks," Toronto senior vice president of baseball operations and general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. "Nothing makes me think that we won't keep doing it the rest of the year. We are just going to have to do it without Roy." The 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner has had his mobility severely limited by the injury and was not able to properly rehab the leg to get him ready for game action. The All-Star pitcher was hurt in the third inning when Rangers' outfielder Kevin Mench drilled a 2-1 pitch back up the middle that ricocheted off Halladay's leg. The pitcher recovered in time to throw Mench out at first, but left the game after the play. With the 9-3 loss to the Indians on Friday, Toronto is now 7 1/2 games out of the AL wild card race. Halladay, 28, went 12-4 with a 2.41 ERA this season.
