Former Cy Young Award winner Dwight Gooden, who finally surrendered and appeared in court on Friday, will stay in police custody until he is put on trial in late October.
Gooden, who had been missing since the beginning of the week, will be held in a Hillsborough County Jail in Tampa, Florida without bail. According to NY1 News, though, Gooden will be permitted to enter a treatment center if a bed is available.
The 40-year-old Gooden was stopped in his BMW early Monday morning after police saw him weaving on the road. The Tampa Police Department claimed Gooden smelled from alcohol and had slurred speech at the time he was pulled over.
Gooden was then instructed to get out of the car and take a Field Sobriety Test, but he refused twice and finally drove away and fled the scene.
According to the Tampa Police Department, Gooden is officially being charged with DUI, Fleeing & Alluding Police and Resisting Arrest without Violence.
Gooden, the 1985 NL Cy Young Award winner, has a career record of 194-112 with a 3.51 ERA in 16 seasons with the Mets, Yankees, Indians, Astros and Devil Rays. In his Cy Young campaign, which was just his second year in the major leagues, Gooden was a spectacular 24-4 with 16 complete games and a sparkling 1.53 ERA.
He spent his first 11 seasons with the Mets and won a World Series in 1986.
