Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James missed the start of mandatory minicamp Friday, and his absence came as no surprise to teammates.
James, who signed a one-year franchise offer worth $8.1 million in March, is reportedly unhappy that he and the team have not been able to work out a long- term deal.
"I think some of us probably already kind of knew that...he probably wasn't going to be here," Colts wide receiver Brandon Stokley said Friday. "It is what it is."
The Colts slapped James with a non-exclusive franchise tag in February after he ranked third in the AFC with 1,548 rushing yards and nine touchdowns last season. His contract is guaranteed, and the team is prevented from rescinding the franchise tag.
"I talked to Edgerrin and definitely got his side of it and why he's not here," said Colts head coach Tony Dungy. "It's definitely a little disappointing to us. We want to have everybody here, but our thing is to focus on the guys who are here."
Indianapolis, the reigning AFC South Division champion, is scheduled to begin training camp on July 27.
"I certainly hope he'll be here in the training-camp situations," Colts quarterback Peyton Manning said. "Hopefully, it works out well for both sides. We certainly expect him to be here when training camp and regular season rolls around."
