American James Blake continued his strong play by posting a hard-fought three-set win over Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in Friday's quarterfinal action at the $675,000 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament -- a final U.S. Open tune-up.
Blake recorded a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 win over the unseeded Chela to advance to the semifinals where he will meet Victor Hanescu. The Romanian posted an upset by ousting fourth-seeded Tommy Robredo 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4 on the hardcourts at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.
In the only previous meeting between the two, Blake was a straight-set winner on the grass in London earlier this season.
Third-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer and fifth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez also reached the final four. The gritty Ferrer grounded Russian Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-4, while Lopez held off fellow left-handed countryman Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Ferrer and Lopez, who have never met, will battle in an all-Spanish semifinal here on Saturday.
This week's winner will collect $84,000.
