The New York Yankees bolstered their outfield depth Saturday, acquiring Matt Lawton from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league pitcher Justin Berg.
Lawton was traded for the second time in a month, as he was dealt from Pittsburgh to Chicago for outfielder Jody Gerut at the July 31 deadline.
In 19 games with the Cubs, Lawton batted .244 with one homer and five runs batted in. Over 120 combined games this season, the 33-year-old veteran has 11 home runs with 49 runs batted in and a .268 batting average. He has also stolen 17 bases.
Lawton has spent the majority of his career in the American League, having played with Minnesota from 1995 until July 2001 when he was traded to the Mets. He also spent three years in Cleveland from 2002 until 2004 before being dealt to Pittsburgh last December.
Berg is in his second professional season. The 21-year-old righthander is 9-4 with a 4.33 earned run average in 30 career games, including 10 starts. This season, he is 6-2 with a 3.53 ERA in 15 games, including nine starts.
