Cleveland Indians catcher Victor Martinez was named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending August 28.
Martinez hit .536 with three homers and six runs batted in for the Tribe last week. In seven games Martinez recorded an AL-leading eight runs scored, a .929 slugging percentage, 26 total bases and a .548 on-base percentage.
He became the first Cleveland catcher to post consecutive four-hit games since Sandy Alomar Jr. in April 1997. This is Martinez' third career weekly honor.
Other candidates for this week's award included Martinez' teammate Jake Westbrook, Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees, Oakland's Mark Ellis, Jorge Cantu of Tampa Bay and Boston's David Wells.
