St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen had surgery Monday on his injured left shoulder.
Rolen, who had the surgery performed by Cincinnati Reds head team physician Dr. Tim Kremchek, should be fully available for spring training in 2006.
"I can say that they thought it was successful surgery, and we expect his rehab should be good," said general manager Walt Jockety. "Now, we'll see what it's like in January, but right now everything is pretty optimistic."
The six-time Gold Glove winner originally hurt the shoulder in a May 10 collision with Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Hee Seop Choi while running out a ground ball. He had surgery shortly afterward and returned to action in mid-June, but batted only .207 with no home runs and just eight RBI in 26 games upon coming back. Rolen was then put back on the 15-day disabled list on July 22.
The injury limited Rolen to only 56 games, a .235 batting average and five home runs in 196 at-bats this season, one year after posting career-bests of 34 homers, 124 RBI and a .314 average.
