Wells' suspension appeal rejected

David Wells, who was suspended six games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball in July for making contact with two umpires, will not have his six-game suspension reduced. The veteran hurler made his appeal last week in Kansas City and it was officially denied on Monday. Wells immediately began serving his punishment, which stemmed from an early July incident when the pitcher made contact with two umpires. In a 6-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on July 2 at Fenway Park, Wells made contact with umpires Chris Guccione and Angel Hernandez after the Red Sox hurler voiced his displeasure with the calling of balls and strikes. Wells' suspension will end on Sunday, and he is expected to take the hill that day against Baltimore. Boston skipper Terry Francona will now have to determine who will fill in for Wells, who was slated to pitch in Friday night's contest against the O's. On the season, the veteran left-hander is 11-6 in 24 starts with a 4.44 ERA for the Red Sox.
