Boston's Wells apologizes for outburst

Boston Red Sox pitcher David Wells apologized for his verbal tirade against Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig on Wednesday following a meeting with executives from the MLBPA and Major League Baseball. "I met today with Major League Baseball and the Players Association and was happy to have the chance to answer questions about my press conference the other day and to learn more about the drug testing program and on-field disciplinary suspensions," said Wells. "Now that I have had this opportunity to sit down and discuss the issues, I better understand the procedures that go with steroid testing. I now know that neither Bud Selig nor anyone else delayed the Palmeiro case and that the Commissioner's Office has worked with the Union to improve the steroid policy. I also understand that John McHale, rather than Bud Selig, was the ultimate decision-maker relating to on-field disciplinary suspensions imposed by Bob Watson. "I understand that I was wrong in my statements about these issues and for that I apologize." On Monday, Wells, who had his six-game suspension for making contact with an umpire upheld, lashed out at Selig with regards to the steroids-related suspension of Baltimore's Rafael Palmeiro. "I'm all for steroid testing," Wells said prior to Monday's game. "I've been tested three times this year, but it's obvious that there's guys that are getting away with it, doing it, and he's (Selig) not doing a thing. I think in the Palmeiro case, Palmeiro already tested positive and didn't serve his term. But from what I understand from a few sources, he (Selig) said, 'Let's just wait until the Hall of Fame (induction) is over and then we'll suspend him.' That's what I heard." The 42-year-old left-hander is 11-6 on the year with a 4.44 ERA.
