Raikkonen fastest but Montoya on Italian GP pole

Despite being the second fastest car on the track, Juan Montoya will start on the pole for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. The No.10 McLaren driver circled the famed high-speed Monza circuit in one minute, 21.054 seconds. "I struggled all weekend with a lot of understeer, but if we can get a good run into the first corner, we should be good to win the race and that's all we can do for the team," said Montoya. Kimi Raikkonen was fastest in final practice and fastest in the qualifying session, but an engine change before qualifying meant he will fall ten places on the grid and begin 11th for the Italian GP. His time around the 3.600-mile road course was a blazing 1:20.878. "We've been quick all weekend and the car is good," said Raikkonen. "Unfortunately the engine let go just in the last lap when I went out in the last practice." Fernando Alonso, Raikkonen's rival for the championship, will start alongside Montoya when the race begins. He was third quickest with a time of 1:21.319. Alonso leads Raikkonen in the driver's championship by 24 points (95-71). Row two will consist of Jenson Button (1:21.369) and Takuma Sato (1:21.477). Hometown favorite, Michael Schumacher of Ferrari, will start in row three. Williams driver Nick Heidfeld suffering from headaches after crashing during testing last week and was not in the No.8 BMW-powered race car. Test driver Antonio Pizzonia was behind the wheel and qualified 16th. Heidfeld said he would be back in the car for the Belgian GP next weekend. The race is set to begin on Sunday at 8 a.m. (edt).
