NASCAR celebrates its All-Star week by bringing its weekly race champions from the previous 16 months and former All-Star winners to the Lowe's Motor Speedway for a Saturday night, 90-lap shootout. The winner takes home more than $1 million.
Ryan Newman and his No.12 Alltel Dodge team won the pole for Saturday night's All-Star exhibition - the Nextel All-Star Challenge. He posted a best time of 2:02.443.
"It's a cool deal to have the guys there and be a part of qualifying," said Newman. "It's a team sport, it should be recognized as that and events like this are a lot of fun."
The qualifying run for the starting grid consisted of three laps and a four- tire pit stop.
Rusty Wallace won last year's pole with a time of 2:03.998
Starting on the front row with Newman, will be Mark Martin who posted a second-best time of 2:03.192.
Wallace (2:03.227) and Elliott Sadler (2:03.414) will start in row two.
The field is made up of 22 drivers, 20 winners and previous champions and two drivers to be determined. One driver will come from the preliminary event.
In the preliminary race, the Nextel Open, Mike Bliss (new track record - 28.540 seconds) and Kyle Busch (28.617) will start on the front row as 28 drivers will attempt to race their way into the main event.
The final driver will be determined by a fan poll. Last year, Kenny Schrader was selected.
Racing is scheduled to begin on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. (edt) with the Open and the $1 million Challenge is expected to begin around 9:00 p.m.
