Wells returns with complete game to lead Boston past Orioles

David Wells returned from his six-game suspension in top form, as he threw a complete game to pace the Boston Red Sox to a 5-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. John Olerud belted a three-run homer and Johnny Damon added a two-run double during a five-run fifth inning for the AL East-leading Red Sox, who have won seven of their last eight contests. It was in July that Wells was suspended for making contact with umpires Chris Guccione and Angel Hernandez, during a contest against Toronto on July 2 at Fenway Park. Wells appealed the suspension, but that was denied last Monday by Major League Baseball. Wells later had to apologize for comments made regarding commissioner Bud Selig's handling of the league's steroid testing program. On Sunday, Wells (12-6) returned by throwing 82 of his 114 pitches for strikes, as he limited the Orioles to seven hits and retired the final 12 batters. The 42-year-old left-hander struck out four without recording a walk to notch his 54th complete game of his career and second in 2005. Wells won his third straight start and moved to 6-1 in his last seven decisions. "He had a real good feel, which is nice to see," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of Wells. "He got to a certain point in the game where he started hitting all his spots with all his pitches." Rodrigo Lopez (13-9) suffered the loss, as he allowed seven hits and five runs in five innings for the Orioles, who lost the final two contests of the three- game series. Baltimore has dropped 12 of its last 16 games. "The first five (innings) I thought we had a shot to get to him," Orioles interim manager Sam Perlozzo said of Wells. "We were hitting some balls hard." The Orioles got two runners aboard in the first inning, but Wells was able to pitch out of the jam. Miguel Tejada and Jay Gibbons singled to start the top of the fourth, but Wells retired the next three batters. Boston then sent nine men to the plate in the fifth. Trot Nixon and Bill Mueller singled, and Olerud followed with his homer to right field. Doug Mirabelli doubled and Tony Graffanino reached first on an infield single off Lopez. Damon then doubled to right field. Melvin Mora and Tejada had consecutive doubles to start Baltimore's sixth, but Wells again pitched out of trouble by retiring the next three hitters and he finished strong.
