Bourdais tops Champ Car provisional qualifying

Series champion Sebastien Bourdais captured the provisional pole for Sunday's Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix Champ Car race. The No.1 Newman/Haas Racing driver circled the 2.104 mile Fundidora Park road course in one minutes. 14.967 seconds (101.036 m.p.h.). The Frenchman earned one championship point for the provisional pole and a guaranteed front row starting position for the race. He is coming off a season-opening victory at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Teammate Bruno Junqueira was second quickest with a best lap of 1:15.248. Rising star Justin Wilson (1:15.836), veteran Alex Tagliani (1:16.217) and Mario Dominguez (1:16.306) completed the top-five. A total of 19 drivers took to the track including seven rookies: Andrew Ranger, Ronnie Bremer, Bjorn Wirdheim, Timo Glock, Ricardo Sperafico, Marcus Marshall and Mexican Jorge Goeters. Goeters, a star in Mexico driving in the Desafio Corona Stock Car Challenge, won the pole and led 24 laps when the NASCAR Busch Series came to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in March. Final qualifying is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. (edt) with the race scheduled to begin on Sunday at 3:45 p.m.
