Andruw Jones highlights NL's Players of the Month

Atlanta Braves outfielder and major league home run leader Andruw Jones was selected as the National League's Player of the Month for August. San Francisco's Noah Lowry earned Pitcher of the Month laurels, while Pittsburgh Pirates hurler Zach Duke garnered his second straight Rookie of the Month recognition. Jones topped all NL batters with 11 homers and 29 RBI in August and batted .272 (28-for-103) with a .602 slugging percentage in 28 games. The All-Star centerfielder also had four game-winning RBI and five multi-RBI outings for the NL East leading Braves. The award was the second this season for Jones, who leads the majors with 45 home runs while his 112 RBI is best in the National League. He also was named Player of the Month in June. Others considered for the honor included Ken Griffey Jr. and Sean Casey of the Cincinnati Reds; David Wright of the New York Mets; Albert Pujols and So Taguchi of the St. Louis Cardinals and Jones' Atlanta teammate, Chipper Jones. Lowry won all five of his August starts and compiled a microscopic 0.69 ERA, yielding just three runs over 39 1/3 innings. The second-year lefthander allowed only 22 hits and nine walks while racking up 33 strikeouts and holding opposing hitters to a .150 batting average. St. Louis' Chris Carpenter, Florida's Todd Jones, San Diego's Jake Peavy and Houston's Roger Clemens also received votes for the pitcher's award. Duke, also the NL's Rookie of the Month for July, went 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA in five starts, including seven shutout innings of two-hit ball in a victory on August 18. The 22-year-old rookie, who became the first Pittsburgh rookie to win his first six decisions, had his month cut short when he sprained his ankle in an August 23 outing against St. Louis. Other rookies who received consideration were Atlanta's Jeff Francoeur, Philadelphia's Ryan Howard, Florida's Jason Vargas and two other Pirates -- Ryan Doumit and Brad Eldred.
