New York Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield left Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay after injuring his left hamstring during the first inning of Wednesday's 5-4 win.
Sheffield hurt himself while attempting to run down Jonny Gomes' fly ball, which landed off the right-center field wall for a triple and gave the Devil Rays an early 3-0 lead. He is listed as day-to-day.
"I felt it (tighten) when I first took off and I tried to slow down," said Sheffield. I tried to stretch it out and it wasn't getting any better."
The All-Star rightfielder entered the night batting .290 with 28 home runs, 102 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases in 133 games.
The Yankees won the game on Jason Giambi's go-ahead two-run homer off Joe Borowski in the bottom of the eighth inning.
