Bonds to return Monday

San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds will finally make his return from the 60-day disabled list on Monday before the start of the team's three-game series at home against the San Diego Padres. Bonds hasn't played all season due to knee problems, but his return could inject some power into the team's offense at a critical time. The Giants are seven games behind San Diego for first place in the NL West, but have seven games left against the Padres this year. The seven-time National League MVP had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on January 31 and March 17, and had an operation again on May 2 to clean out a bacterial infection. He also underwent surgery on his left kneecap last October 12. Bonds was examined by Angels head orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum and physical therapist Clive Brewster this past Wednesday, and was cleared to travel with his teammates. Bonds had five straight days of baseball-related activities, including batting practice and sprinting in the outfield. However, he took a break from those rigors on Saturday. With 703 career home runs, Bonds is just 52 short of tying Hank Aaron's all- time record. He needs 12 more homers to surpass the legendary Babe Ruth for second place. Giants general manager Brian Sabean has said that Bonds, who is signed through 2006 for $18 million, would not be activated to serve solely as a pinch hitter and would have to be healthy enough to play the outfield. The 41-year-old Bonds, who is entering his 20th season, became the oldest winner of an MVP last year when he topped the NL with a .362 batting average. He also belted 45 homers and drove in 101 runs despite just 373 official at- bats. That's because he broke his own major-league record by walking 232 times. His .812 slugging percentage was tops in the majors and his .609 on- base percentage and 120 intentional walks set single-season major league marks. He also scored 129 times, second most in the NL. Incredibly, Bonds had more intentional free passes than any other major league team last season. Over the last three years, Bonds has received 249 intentional walks.
