Andrew Golota's fourth title shot was over almost before it began.
Lamon Brewster stunned a pro-Golota crowd with a technical knockout in the first round Saturday night, sending Golota to the mat three times in 53 seconds to retain his WBO heavyweight belt.
Brewster (32-2, 28 KOs) landed 15 punches in the brief action, continually connecting on good left hooks that kept Golota on his heels.
"I studied his fights. He keeps his hands up high, and I knew he was made for me," Brewster said.
All three knockdowns came on left hooks. The first sent Golota to his back less than 30 seconds into the fight, and before the challenger could recover, Brewster sent him through the ropes and dangling over the photographers' pit with another flurry.
That silenced the United Center crowd -- many of which, like Golota, are part of the Chicago's sizeable Polish community -- and Brewster ended the fight with another barrage.
"He wasn't going to stand...no man can stand in front of me," Brewster said. "That's suicide."
The 37-year-old Golota (38-6-1) has lost all four of his career title fights, including two last season against John Ruiz and Chris Byrd. The other loss came against Lennox Lewis in 1997 -- also by way of a first-round knockout.
Brewster, who claimed his title by upsetting Wladimir Klitschko with a fifth- round TKO last April 10, has won eight straight fights.
In the undercard, Tomasz Adamek won a majority decision over Paul Briggs to claim the vacant WBC Light Heavyweight belt.
Adamek (29-0), who like Golota was born in Poland, ended Briggs' 22-fight winning streak. Briggs (23-2) hadn't lost since January 4, 1997 -- his second professional fight.
