Seattle Mariners catcher Dan Wilson, who has been sidelined most of this season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, announced his retirement at a press conference on Monday.
Wilson has been with the Mariners since being traded from the Cincinnati Reds following the 1993 season. He was an All-Star in 1996, during a season in which he batted .285 with career-highs of 18 homers and 83 RBI.
The 36-year-old Wilson was hitting .185 in 10 games this season. He owns the Mariners career mark for most starts (1,250) and home runs (88) as a catcher. His .295 batting average in 2002 was the highest ever by a backstop in franchise history.
In 1995, Wilson batted .278 to help the Mariners to their first division championship.
Wilson finishes his career with a .262 average, 88 homers and 519 RBI.
