Wright leaves contest against Jays

New York Yankees pitcher Jaret Wright was forced to leave Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the third inning after he was struck by the barrel of a broken bat. Eric Hinske's bat broke as he hit a ground ball to first base. The barrel of the bat flew toward the mound and hit Wright as he tried to avoid it. The pitcher fell to the ground and clutched his arm. He tried to throw a few pitches before leaving the field. The Yankees said Wright suffered a bruise and a cut on his elbow. "It hit me in the back of the elbow," said Wright. "I threw some pitches, but it just didn't feel right, so we'll see tomorrow." It marked the second time this month Wright had to leave a game because of injury. On September 1 in Seattle, Wright was hit in the collarbone by a line drive off the bat of Raul Ibanez. "That poor son of gun, he keeps getting in the way, I guess," Yankee manager Joe Torre said. "I know he was frustrated by it." On Sunday, Wright was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on five hits in 2 1/3 innings and left the contest trailing 4-2. Al Leiter took over in his place. Wright was saddled with the loss in the 6-5 setback and fell to 5-3 for the season. Yankee first baseman Jason Giambi also left the game with back spasms.
