The San Francisco 49ers have waived safety Dwaine Carpenter and filled his roster spot by signing offensive tackle Anthony Clement.
Carpenter joined the 49ers as a rookie free agent out of North Carolina A&T in 2003 and had played in the defensive backfield and on special teams. He had 54 tackles in 15 games, starting six last season, and had one special teams tackle in two games this year.
Clement spent seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and started eight of the 16 games he played during the 2004 campaign. He signed as a free agent with Denver in the offseason, but was waived after training camp.
A second-round pick by the Cardinals out of Louisiana-Lafayette in 1998, the 6-foot-8, 320-pound Clement had started 45 straight games at right tackle for Arizona from 1998 through 2001.
