Martin new king of All-Star Challenge

Veteran Mark Martin captured NASCAR's "All- Star" event - The Nextel All-Star Challenge. The No.6 Roush Racing Ford driver crossed the finish line 0.582 seconds ahead of runner-up Elliott Sadler. It was his second career All-Star win. "I told them, if they give me a ride, I'll come back next year," said the soon-to-be retired Martin. "This is for the fan." The event celebrates NASCAR's All-Star week by bringing its weekly race champions from the previous 16 months and former All-Star winners to the Lowe's Motor Speedway for a Saturday night, 90-lap shootout. The winner takes home more than $1 million. Twenty-two drivers started the "main" event after Brian Vickers won the "Nextel Open, the qualifying race for all those who had not originally made the field. The No.25 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet driver edged out Mike Bliss after he sent him spinning on the final lap. He beat Bliss to the finish line by just 0.114 seconds, even though Bliss was going sideways at the time. "He spun me out," said Bliss simply. "I don't like to drive that way, if that's the way he wants to drive we have 600 miles coming here next week." The final starter came from a fan vote and Martin Truex Jr. was named to the event. The first portion of the race was a 40-lap event with the winner collecting $75,000. Ryan Newman jumped out quickly from his pole position. After the first dozen laps, the No.12 Alltel Dodge held a 1.055-second lead. He led the first 15 laps before a mandatory pit stop. He came out sixth more than three seconds behind Elliott Sadler. Sadler knew what to do with the lead and built it to 1.500 seconds with seven laps to go. But following a caution the race turned ugly. A nine-car accident began on lap 36 when Tony Stewart got into the back of Joe Nemechek and sent him into Kevin Harvick's No.29 Chevrolet. The aftermath collected six more cars. "I got into the back of the No.01," said Stewart. "Don't know how it happened because I didn't speed up, but I must have hit the back of the No.01." Other cars involved were: Martin Truex Jr., Terry Labonte, Kasey Kahne, Michael Waltrip, Carl Edwards and Dale Earnhardt Jr. While all that was going on, Martin had just made a pass on Sadler for the lead. The race was red-flagged to clean up the mess. When the green flag fell to restart the race, it was Martin fighting off Sadler to win the first segment by 0.496 seconds. Segment number two was a 30-lap event, also with $75,000 gong to the winner. To start the second segment, the top-six cars were inverted. That put Vickers on the lead with Newman in second and Martin down to sixth place. Newman jumped right to the lead, easily overtaking Vickers. The No.12 dominated the middle portion, leading all 30 laps. The final section began with just 13 cars on the track. All 13 cars began the final segment with a pit stop, but while Newman took four tires, Sadler, Gordon and Martin took just an outside pair to get track position. Just one lap into the shootout, Newman lost control after getting below the bottom white line and took himself and teammate Rusty Wallace at of the race. Martin jumped to a lead off the next restart and Jimmie Johnson went with him. Sadler retook second place with 15 to go and was just 0.499 second behind Martin. But it was not to be for Sadler. Martin, controlled his lead, hit his marks and took the checkered flag. "I just spun the tires too much on the restart and when he (Martin) got out front I just couldn't run him down," said Sadler. The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series resumes next weekend with the Coca Cola 600 on Sunday evening.
