New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz were named the co-Players of the Week in the American League.
Cano batted .429 with a league-best 13 runs batted in and nine runs scored last week to help the Yankees post a 5-1 record -- all on the road. He had eight extra-base hits -- four doubles, three homers and a triple -- while leading the majors in total bases with 27.
The rookie's first career grand slam on Thursday erased a four-run deficit and helped New York rally past Tampa Bay. He then added a career-best five runs batted in with a pair of homers on Friday in a victory against Toronto.
Ortiz, meanwhile, batted .385 with a league-best five home runs and a slugging percentage of 1.000 in seven games. Two of his homers were game-winners, as he connected in the 11th inning to beat Toronto on Monday and added a two-run shot to snap an eighth-inning tie on Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
