Kenny Brack, the 1999 Indianapolis 500 winner, headed a list of 10 drivers to qualify for next Sunday's 89th running of the Indianapolis 500.
Brack, who had not raced in 19 months after a horrific crash at the Texas Motor Speedway, posted the fastest four-lap qualifying average of the month - 227.598 m.p.h. But because it did not happen on MBNA Pole day, the former champion will start 23rd in the field.
"It wasn't perfect, but it was plenty good enough," Brack said.
"It's great for Kenny," said Rice, whose injury a week and a half ago caused the team to call on Brack. "He's done the job before, but to come in on short notice and do this, it's awesome."
It was October 12, 2003 when Brack collided with Tomas Scheckter and was sent airborne. He suffered two broken ankles, and injuries to his back, ribs and thigh.
Other drivers to make the field included: Ryan Briscoe, Patrick Carpentier, Ed Carpenter, Jaques Lazier, A.J. Foyt IV, Marty Roth, Larry Foyt, Jeff Ward and Jimmy Kite.
The "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" is scheduled for Sunday,
