The Chicago White Sox placed right- handed pitcher Orlando Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with soreness in his right shoulder. The move is retroactive to May 17.
"El Duque" was expected to start Sunday's series finale with the Cubs, but the White Sox decided to be cautious. The injury is not deemed to be serious, but the team wants to allow Hernandez the opportunity to rest in order to be ready for the remainder of the season.
For the year, Hernandez is 5-1 with a 3.91 ERA. He was signed to a two- year, $8 million contract in the offseason after spending his first six years with the New York Yankees. During his time in the Bronx, the veteran compiled a 61-40 mark with a 3.96 ERA.
A native of Villa Clara, Cuba, Hernandez has been on the disabled list before, missing the entire 2003 campaign after having shoulder surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff.
Meanwhile, the White Sox purchased the contract of Brandon McCarthy and the righthander made his major league debut on Sunday. He surrendered two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings, while walking one and striking out six. However, he was not involved in the decision, as the Cubs posted a 4-3 triumph.
