The Pittsburgh Pirates will reportedly have a new manager in 2006, as interim skipper Pete Mackanin won't be back next year.
Mackanin took over when Lloyd McClendon was fired on September 6. He guided the Pirates to a record of 12-14 down the stretch, but the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette reported Monday that general manager Dave Littlefield informed Mackanin after Sunday's season-finale that he would not be retained.
"He [Littlefield] said the timing wasn't right for me to get the job," the paper quoted Mackanin as saying. "He liked what I did, but he's got somebody else in mind -- somebody with more experience at the big league level."
The Post-Gazette said former Pirate manager Jim Leyland could be among the names on Littlefield's wish list. Leyland was the Pittsburgh skipper from 1986 through 1996, guiding the club to three NL East titles from 1990-92.
The Pirates have not had a winning season since that title run and just completed their 13th straight losing campaign with a record of 67-95, finishing last in the NL Central.
The paper also reported that Oakland manager Ken Macha and Dodger skipper Jim Tracy could be part of Littlefield's list.
