Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and Chicago White Sox right-hander Jose Contreras have been named the American League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for September.
Ortiz had a sensational September by drilling a league-leading 11 home runs, while driving in 29 runs and hitting .320. Ortiz also scored 19 runs while posting a .670 slugging percentage and .425 on-base percentage.
This marked the first-ever Player of the Month Award for Ortiz.
Contreras went undefeated (6-0) in six September starts and posted a 1.99 earned run average. Contreras became the third White Sox pitcher to win this award this season, joining Jon Garland and Mark Buehrle. The last time three different players from the same team won AL Pitcher of the Month in the same season was when Scott Erickson, Jack Morris and Kevin Tapani did it for Minnesota in 1991.
New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano was named AL Rookie of the Month after hitting .381 with five homers and 16 RBI in September.
