Winn, Pettitte, Howard honored for September

San Francisco outfielder Randy Winn, Houston Astros lefty Andy Pettitte and Philadelphia first baseman Ryan Howard have been honored as the Nationals Leagues, player, pitcher and rookie of the month for September. Winn, who also captured the final weekly honor for the 2005 regular season, topped the NL with 51 hits in September. He also had a .447 batting average, an .877 slugging percentage, 100 total bases and was tied for the league lead with 11 homers. He had 17 multi-hit contests during the month. Other players receiving consideration for the award were Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins, Houston's Lance Berkman and Pittsburgh's Jason Bay. Rollins ended the season with a 36-game hitting streak and hit .402 during the last month. Pettitte went 4-0 in his six starts in September and posted a 1.86 ERA. He gave up just 27 hits and four walks to go along with 29 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings. Howard topped all NL rookies with a .691 slugging percentage in September and also had three triples. He finished the month with a .278 batting average with 19 runs scored and 22 RBI. He homered in three consecutive games, from September 6-9 and finished the year leading all rookies with 22 home runs. Ryan Dempster of the Cubs, Jon Lieber of the Phillies, Derrick Turnbow and Rick Helling of the Brewers, Tom Glavine of the Mets, and Hector Carrasco of the Nationals also received consideration for the pitching honor.
