The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired linebacker Jamie Winborn from the San Francisco 49ers on Friday in exchange for an undisclosed future draft choice.
Winborn passed a physical and got his wish to depart the Bay Area. Winborn left the team last week because he was upset with his reserve role. Andre Carter, a converted defensive end, has been solid at the linebacker spot for San Francisco and took Winborn's job.
"He's been a starter for most of his career," Jaguars director of player personnel James Harris said. "They (49ers) converted to a 3-4 defense and he's more of a 4-3 linebacker. He became available."
Winborn is expected to play at weakside linebacker for the Jaguars. Akin Ayodele is currently the starter at the WILL position.
The 26-year-old Winborn is in his fifth NFL season, all with the 49ers, and has 190 tackles and nine sacks in his career out of Vanderbilt.
"It was an opportunity to get a veteran linebacker with starting experience. The plan is for him to compete," Harris added.
