Royals' Long becomes free agent

Kansas City Royals outfielder Terrence Long has elected to become a free agent. Long was acquired by Kansas City in a trade with San Diego last November. He batted .279 with six home runs and 53 RBI in 137 games during the 2005 season. The 29-year-old broke into the majors with the New York Mets in 1999, playing three games, then was shipped to Oakland in July of that season. He spent four productive years with the Athletics before joining San Diego in 2004. In 878 career games, Long has a batting average of .270 with 69 homers and 374 runs batted in. The Royals also announced that pitcher Nate Field opted for free agency. The club also claimed pitcher Joel Peralta off waivers from the Angels. Field appeared in seven games for the Royals in 2005, posting a 9.45 earned run average with no record. Peralta notched a record of 1-0 with a 3.89 ERA in 28 games for the Angels.
