Angels keep Colon off ALCS roster

Angels ace Bartolo Colon will not pitch in the American League Championship Series because of a shoulder injury. Colon was forced to leave Game 5 of the Division Series against the New York Yankees on Monday in the second inning because of inflammation in the shoulder and Angels manager Mike Scioscia decided to keep the ailing righthander off the roster for the upcoming series against the Chicago White Sox. Should the Angels reach the World Series, Colon could return if he is healthy enough to pitch. Teams are allowed to make roster changes between series. After Colon left Monday's contest, rookie Ervin Santana threw 5 1/3 strong innings to help the Angels finish off the Yankees in a 5-3 triumph. Santana has likely earned a spot in the rotation for the ALCS. Colon left after throwing just 23 pitches with the game still scoreless. He worked through the first inning without any noticeable problems, but was wincing in pain during his warmup tosses before the start of the second. After taking a few more throws off the mound following a visit from the training staff, he remained in the game to face Robinson Cano but couldn't complete the at-bat. Santana then entered and was unfazed in his first career postseason appearance. The 22-year-old allowed three runs and five hits before giving way to the Angels' stellar relief combo of Kelvim Escobar and Francisco Rodriguez, who held New York down over the final 2 2/3 innings to preserve the clincher. Colon, one of the top contenders for this year's AL Cy Young Award, compiled a league-best 21 wins along with a 3.48 earned run average in 33 starts during the regular season. He suffered the loss last Tuesday in Game 1 of the ALDS after allowing four runs on eight hits in the Yankees' 4-2 victory. The Angels filled Colon's spot on the ALCS roster with pitcher Esteban Yan.
