Former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon has moved from the bench to the bullpen, so to speak. The Detroit Tigers and new manager Jim Leyland rounded out the coaching staff Tuesday and McClendon was named the club's bullpen coach.
The Tigers also named Rafael Belliard infield coach, Gene Lamont third base coach, Don Slaught hitting coach and Andy Van Slyke first base coach.
McClendon was fired by the Pirates on September 6 after leading Pittsburgh to a 55-81 mark in his fifth season with the club. The Pirates were 336-446 under McClendon, who played for Leyland during his five-year stint with the Pirates from 1990-94.
Leyland was manager of the Pirates from 1986-96.
Van Slyke also played for Leyland in Pittsburgh from 1987-94. This is his first big league coaching job.
Lamont, who previously coached under Leyland in Pittsburgh, is also a former major league manager, having guided the White Sox (1992-95) and the Pirates (1997-2000). McClendon took over for Lamont, who served as manager of the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons last year, in Pittsburgh.
Slaught played 16 major league seasons for the Royals, Rangers, Yankees, Pirates, Angels, White Sox and Padres.
