Jimmie Johnson was one of the last drivers to qualify and he used the late draw and cooler track to capture the pole for tonight's Dollar General 300 Busch Series event at the Lowe's Motor Speedway.
The No.48 Chevrolet circled the 1.5-mile speedway in a Busch Series track record 28.764 seconds (187.735 m.p.h.). The old mark was 28.918 seconds set in May by Kasey Kahne.
The pole victory was Johnson's second of the season and second of his Busch career.
Starting on the front row with Johnson will be Ryan Newman who posted a second-best time of 28.933 seconds.
Newman recently tied Sam Ard's record of four consecutive wins with his most recent victory in Dover. Ard set the mark in 1983. Newman's consecutive victories were at Watkins Glen, Michigan, Bristol and Dover. He did not compete at California or Richmond.
Kyle Busch (28.966) and Reed Sorenson (29.015) will start in row two.
Busch Series points leader Martin Truex Jr. (29.186) will begin 14th on the grid.
Truex Jr. expanded his championship lead from 26 points to 49 last week in Kansas. But it was not because the No.8 Chance 2 Motorsports team had a great race. Rather it was because Clint Bowyer suffered a late-race tire failure that dropped him from a top-five finish to 16th. Before that point, a questionable pit stop call by Truex Jr. had him trailing his rival in the title chase.
Bowyer will start ninth in the 43-car field.
In last year's Dollar General 300 won by Mike Bliss, Truex Jr. finished sixth and Bowyer 10th.
The race is set to begin tonight at 8 p.m. (edt).
