Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim All-Star reliever Francisco Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a strained right forearm. The move is retroactive to May 15.
The 23-year-old righthander, who is 1-1 with 10 saves and a 2.25 earned run average this season, suffered the injury in the first game of a doubleheader versus the Detroit Tigers on May 14.
Rodriguez finished fourth in voting for the 2004 American League Cy Young award after posting a 4-1 record, 12 saves and a splendid 1.82 ERA in 69 games. The young flame-thrower struck out 123 batters in 84 innings and allowed just 51 hits.
A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Rodriguez is 15-5 in his career with a 24 saves and a 2.35 ERA - the fourth best in club history.
In other Angels news, the team recalled righthander Joel Peralta from Triple-A Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League and designated outfielder Chris Prieto for assignment.
Peralta, who was 4-1 with seven saves and a 2.60 with Salt Lake, has never played in the majors.
