Graves designated for assignment

The Cincinnati Reds designated struggling closer Danny Graves for assignment on Monday. The club now has 10 days to either trade or release him. Graves, the franchise leader in saves with 182, had been brutal of late. On Sunday, after allowing five runs and four hits in one-third of an inning against the Cleveland Indians, the 31-year-old righthander made an obscene gesture toward the fans at Great American Ball Park. On the year, Graves is 1-1 with a 7.36 earned run average and 10 saves. However, he has allowed nine runs on 10 hits over his last three appearances, spanning 2 2/3 frames. Graves also has two blown saves this month. Graves broke into the majors with Cleveland in 1996 before being acquired by the Reds during the 1997 campaign. For his career, the Vietnamese native is 41-43 with a 3.98 ERA. In a related move, the Reds promoted lefthander Randy Keisler from Triple-A Louisville. The 29-year-old Keisler, who was the International League Pitcher of the Week for April 18-24, had been 2-3 with a 2.98 ERA and one save in nine appearances, including seven starts.
