The Kansas City Royals announced Friday that they have claimed pitcher Bobby Madritsch off waivers.
The 29-year old left-hander was slated as the No. 3 starter for Seattle entering the 2004 campaign, but left his first start on April 6 with shoulder pain and missed the remainder of the season.
Madritsch made his major league debut with the Mariners in July of '04, going 6-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 15 games that year. The 6-2, 218-pound Illinois native allowed 33 runs over 88 innings with 60 strikeouts and 33 walks. His six wins were the most by a Seattle rookie since 1999, and his ERA ranked third amongst rookies with 80-plus innings of work.
Madritsch was originally chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1998 draft, but was signed in '02 by the Mariners as a minor league free agent.
