Konerko among 62 players filing for free agency

First baseman Paul Konerko was among 62 players filing for free agency on Thursday, one day after he helped the Chicago White Sox to their first World Series title in 88 years. Konerko batted .283 with 40 home runs and 100 RBI during the regular season to join Frank Thomas (1995-96) as the only two players in White Sox history to hit 40 home runs in consecutive seasons. Konerko led the White Sox in the postseason with five homers and 15 RBI, as the team won their first World Series since 1917 by completing a four-game sweep of the Houston Astros Wednesday night. He was honored as the American League Championship Series MVP, when the White Sox finished off the Angels in five games. Some of the other key players to file for free agency on the first day of eligibility were Boston's infield tandem of first baseman Kevin Millar and third baseman Bill Mueller, Cleveland closer Bob Wickman and Florida disgruntled starter A.J. Burnett. Angels catcher Bengie Molina, Phillies closer Billy Wagner, San Diego catcher Ramon Hernandez, and outfielders Randy Winn of San Francisco and Preston Wilson of Washington also filed on the first day. Wickman had a career-best 45 saves, which tied with the Angels' Francisco Rodriguez for the most in the American League this past season. The 28-year-old Burnett went 12-12 with a 3.44 ERA in 32 starts, but dropped his final six decisions of the season. He was sent home by the Marlins in late September in the wake of some negative comments he made about the team's then- manager Jack McKeon. Now though, Burnett figures to be one of the most coveted free agent pitchers in the offseason. Wagner compiled a 4-3 record with a 1.51 ERA with 38 saves this past season. Molina, a Gold Glove winner in 2002-03, had career-highs in average (.295), homers (15) and also drove in 69 runs in 2005.
