Rafael Palmeiro and Kenny Rogers, two players coming off troubled seasons, were among 54 players who filed for free agency on Friday.
Palmeiro, who played primarily at first base for Baltimore the last two seasons, was suspended for 10 days for a positive steroids test. The suspension, which was handed down August 1, came shortly after he reached the 3,000-hit plateau.
He was suspended after reportedly testing positive for the powerful anabolic steroid stanozolol -- the same substance that Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for in 1988.
Only the fourth player in baseball history to record 500 home runs and 3,000 hits, Palmeiro was seen as a major distraction for the Orioles following his suspension. He didn't play in a game after August 30 and finished the season with a .266 average, 18 homers and 60 RBI.
Rogers, who has pitched the last two years for Texas, was suspended for 20 games following his run-in with a pair of cameramen in late June. The penalty was reduced to 13 games by an arbitrator.
The 40-year-old Rogers was heavily scrutinized the remainder of the season, including when he pitched in this year's All-Star Game. The lefty finished the season with a 14-8 record and 3.46 ERA.
Perennial All-Star catcher Mike Piazza, who was a staple for the New York Mets the last 7 1/2 seasons and finished the 2005 season three homers shy of 400 for his career, has filed for free agency. The all-time leader for homers by a catcher, Piazza fractured a bone in his left hand in August and saw limited playing time after that. He was honored graciously by Mets fans the last week of the season and ended 2005 hitting .251 with 19 homers and 62 RBI in 113 games.
Several other high-profile players filed for free agency on Friday, including outfielders Johnny Damon of the Boston Red Sox, Jacque Jones of the Minnesota Twins, Bernie Williams of the New York Yankees and Reggie Sanders of the St. Louis Cardinals. Starting pitchers Kevin Millwood of the Cleveland Indians, Jarrod Washburn of the LA Angels, Kevin Brown of the Yankees and Matt Morris of the Cardinals also filed. Relief pitchers Todd Jones of the Florida Marlins, Tom Gordon of the Yankees, Jose Mesa of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego Padres were also on that list, as was Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra.
Damon, who could become one of the biggest commodities on the open market for centerfielders, batted .316 with 10 homers and 75 RBI in his fourth season with the Red Sox.
Williams, a five-time All-Star, has been with the Yankees since starting his major league career in 1991. He played center field and also was a designated hitter this past season and batted .249 with 12 homers and 64 RBI.
Millwood may be seen as one of the most coveted free agent starters, especially after the season he had. Even though the righty went 9-11 for the season, his 2.86 ERA was tops in the American League.
A total of 116 players filed for free agency in the first two days following the sweep by the Chicago White Sox over Houston in the World Series. One of those players, outfielder Randy Winn, had his option exercised by the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
