The New York Jets made it official on Monday and placed quarterback Chad Pennington, center Kevin Mawae and linebacker Eric Barton on injured reserve.
Pennington underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in early October after suffering a shoulder injury during the team's Week 3 loss to Jacksonville.
The franchise signal-caller, who signed a seven-year, $64 million contract extension last September, had struggled this season, completing 49-of-83 passes for 530 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also fumbled seven times.
For his career, much of which has been spent hurt, Pennington has played in 44 games, completing 65.3 percent of his passes for 8,621 yards with 55 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.
Mawae suffered a torn left triceps in Week 6 against Buffalo. The six-time Pro Bowl pick had played in 180 regular-season games, including 177 consecutive starts with the Seahawks and Jets.
Barton tore his left biceps last Monday in a loss to Atlanta. He had 25 tackles in four games this season, also missing three games because of an ankle injury.
The Jets, on Monday, signed offensive lineman Steve Morley to a contract extension and also inked linebacker T.J. Hollowell and guard Doug Nienhuis.
