Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, former world No. 1 French star Amelie Mauresmo and former Roland Garros titlist Justine Henin-Hardenne were among Tuesday's first-round winners at the French Open.
The second-seeded Sharapova was severely tested by fellow Russian Evgenia Linetskaya in a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-4 struggle on a chilly and windy day at Stade Roland Garros.
The 18-year-old Sharapova's second-round opponent will be French qualifier Aravance Rezai.
The third-seeded Mauresmo, who has yet to reach a semifinal at her home Slam, dismantled Aussie Evie Dominikovic 6-2, 6-1, while the red-hot Henin-Hardenne, seeded 10th here, won her 18th straight match by holding off 2000 Roland Garros runner-up Conchita Martinez 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
The three-time Grand Slam titlist and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Henin- Hardenne is now 21-1 overall this season, including a flawless 18-0 record on clay.
Up next for Henin-Hardenne will be Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual, while Mauresmo will meet fellow Frenchwoman Alize Cornet.
U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova drilled France's Mathilde Johansson 6-1, 6-1 at the year's second Grand Slam event. The sixth-seeded Kuznetsova will meet Swede Sofia Arvidsson in the second round.
Seventh-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova pasted American Mashona Washington 6-4, 6-2, while 12th-seeded Russian Elena Bovina blitzed Venezuelan Maria Vento- Kabchi 6-0, 6-3.
In other top-16 action, No. 13 Nathalie Dechy of France bested Czech Michaela Pastikova 6-1, 6-4 and Israeli Anna Smashnova smashed 15th-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic 6-0, 6-3.
Popular 17th-seeded Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin grounded American Lilia Osterloh 6-0, 6-2.
Other seeded winners on Day 2 were No. 22 Italian Francesca Schiavone, No. 24 Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva, No. 29 Serb Ana Ivanovic and No. 30 Argentine Gisela Dulko.
Mild upsets occurred when Spaniard Nuria Llagostera Vives toppled 23rd-seeded Japanese Ai Sugiyama in three sets, Russian Anna Chakvetadze knocked out 26th- seeded Argentine Paola Suarez in three and Israeli Shahar Peer beat 28th- seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli in straights.
Additional first-round wins came for Rezai, Cornet, Arvidsson, Ruano Pascual, France's Severine Beltrame, Czechs Iveta Benesova, Nicole Vaidisova, Kveta Peschke and Klara Koukalova, Italians Antonella Serra Zanetti and Tathiana Garbin, German Anna-Lena Groenefeld, American Marissa Irvin, Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, Aussie Samantha Stosur and Puerto Rican Kristina Brandi.
The second round will get underway on Wednesday, with matches on tap for top- seeded Lindsay Davenport, 2004 French Open runner-up Elena Dementieva, 2002 runner-up Venus Williams and two-time finalist Kim Clijsters.
The Australian Open runner-up Davenport will meet gritty Chinese Shuai Peng, while the fourth-seeded Dementieva will encounter Croat Sanda Mamic, the 11th- seeded Williams will battle Colombian Fabiola Zuluaga and the 14th-seeded Clijsters will tangle with Slovak Ludmila Cervanova.
