Yankees add Bowa to coaching staff

The New York Yankees named former big league manager Larry Bowa third base coach on Tuesday. Bowa spent last season as a television analyst after being fired as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies following the 2004 campaign. He replaces Luis Sojo, who spent last season as the third base coach. No announcement on Sojo was made by the Yankees. "We are excited by the opportunity of adding Larry to our coaching staff," said senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman. "His experience as a player, coach and manager, combined with his intense desire to win, are ingredients we welcome to the Yankees’ organization." Bowa has over 34 years of experience as a player, coach and manager. He previously served as third base coach for the Phillies, Angels and Mariners for a 12-year span that started in 1988. He was then named manager of the Phillies in 2001 and served the organization until he was fired after the 2004 season. Bowa was named National League Manager of the Year on 2001. Bowa, the starting shortstop for Philadelphia's 1980 World Champion team, played 16 seasons in the majors with the Phillies (1970-81), Chicago Cubs (1982-85) and New York Mets (1985). The five-time National League All-Star played in 2,222 games at shortstop, ranking him second in N.L. behind Ozzie Smith (2,511) and fourth in Majors behind Luis Aparicio (2,581), Smith and Cal Ripken, Jr. (2,302).
