Pavel Bure retires

New York Rangers right winger Pavel Bure announced his retirement Tuesday, ending an electric but injury-filled 12-year NHL career. The "Russian Rocket" was also named general manager of his country's Olympic hockey team Tuesday, and will be in charge of improving upon a disappointing third-place finish in the 2002 Winter Games. Bure was taken in the just sixth round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by Vancouver (113th overall), but quickly became one of the league's most potent offensive weapons. The 5-foot-11 lefty netted 60 goals in both the 1992-93 and '93-94 seasons, and scored 50-plus goals five times in his career. He guided the Canucks to a 1994 Stanley Cup appearance, where Vancouver fell to the New York Rangers. Bure tore his right anterior cruciate ligament in November of 1995, though, and played in only 15 games the following season. The former Calder Trophy winner was traded to the Florida Panthers in '99 and scored 58 and 59 goals, respectively, in his first two full seasons there. He was then moved to the Rangers in '02, but was limited to just 51 games over the course of two seasons with another knee injury, and did not play in '03-04. In 12 NHL seasons, Bure tallied 437 goals and 342 assists over 702 games. He won a silver medal with Russia in the 1998 Olympics and received a bronze with the team in 2002.
