Baltimore Orioles catcher Javy Lopez broke a bone in his right hand while behind the plate during the club's 3-2 victory over Seattle on Tuesday.
Lopez suffered the injury after taking a foul tip by the Mariners' Bret Boone off his unprotected hand in the third inning. X-rays revealed the break which will likely send the 34-year-old backstop to the disabled list.
Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, who extended his hit streak to 14 games on Tuesday, also left the game after being hit by a pitch on his knee during the seventh inning.
"It's a good win but I lost two of my players," said Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli. "Brian, we'll see how he is tomorrow, but in Javy's case it might be a while."
Lopez's injury comes on the same night Sammy Sosa returned to the Orioles' lineup after being activated from the 15-day DL. The slugging rightfielder had been out since May 4 with an abscess staph infection in his left foot.
In 42 games this season, Lopez is batting .278 with seven home runs and 22 RBI.
