Scioscia receives contract extension

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and manager Mike Scioscia Friday agreed to a two-year contract extension with a club option for an additional year. Scioscia, who has guided the Angels to three playoff appearances over the last four years and led the club to its first-ever world championship in 2002, is now signed through the 2009 season. There is also a club option for 2010. The 46-year-old Scioscia owns a 520-452 overall record since taking over the team prior to the 2000 campaign. He is the only manager in franchise history to reach the playoffs three times and his .535 winning percentage is also the best all-time in club annals. "We are delighted with the job Mike Scioscia has done as our manager," said Angels vice president and general manager Bill Stoneman. "Mike has proven to be one of the top managers in the game and we are excited to have him in an Angel uniform for years to come." Scioscia's 2002 Angels squad won a franchise-record 99 games and reached their first World Series after defeating the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins in the playoffs. The Angels then topped the San Francisco Giants in a thrilling seven games to capture their lone world title. For his efforts, Scioscia was named the 2002 American League Manager of the Year. The Angels have won the AL West crown in each of the past two seasons and posted a 95-67 mark in 2005. Scioscia also received a contract extension after the 2003 season which ran through 2007 with a club option for the following year.
