Guidry back in Yankee pinstripes

The New York Yankees continued to fill out their coaching staff for 2006 on Friday and brought back a familiar face by naming Ron Guidry the club's pitching coach. Guidry has no prior coaching experience, other than working as an instructor in Yankee spring training since 1990. A three-time 20-game winner in 14 years as a Yankee, Guidry will replace Mel Stottlemyre, who stepped down after the 2005 campaign. Stottlemyre had been the only pitching coach during Joe Torre's tenure as Yankee manager. Guidry was a four-time American League All-Star and compiled 170 wins during his career. He had one of the most dominating seasons in baseball history during the 1978 campaign, posting a record of 25-3 with a 1.74 earned run average and a franchise-record 248 strikeouts on the way to a unanimous selection as the AL's Cy Young winner. The Yankees retired his number 49 on August 23, 2003. Also on Friday, New York named Joe Kerrigan as its bullpen coach. Kerrigan, who joined the Yankees on July 1, 2005 as a special advisor to general manager Brian Cashman, was a long-time big league pitching coach and was the manager of the Boston Red Sox from August 16, 2001 until the end of that season. Kerrigan becomes the fourth former big league skipper to join Torre's coaching staff this week, following third base coach Larry Bowa, bench coach Lee Mazzilli and first base coach Tony Pena. Yankee great Don Mattingly will return for his third season as the club's hitting coach.
