The Cincinnati Reds have announced that Bucky Dent will take over as the club's bench coach.
Dent, who will also handle infield coaching duties, spent the last three seasons in the New York Yankees farm system managing the Columbus Clippers.
"He's an outstanding teacher and was an outstanding defensive player," Reds manager Jerry Narron said of Dent. "He played the game fundamentally right. He's known for one home run, but he played the game the way it's supposed to be played."
Dent served as Yankees manager in 1989, replacing Dallas Green, and led the club to a 36-53 record over the end of 1989 and the beginning of 1990. Dent finished with a 443-401 record with Columbus.
Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 1970, Dent compiled 40 homers and 423 runs batted in over 12 seasons (1,392 games) in the major leagues.
Dent is best known for his three-run homer with the Yankees at Boston's Fenway Park in a one-game playoff for the 1978 division title.
