Arizona pitcher Vazquez requests trade

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Javier Vazquez has reportedly requested a trade to a city closer to his offseason home in Puerto Rico. Vazquez, who was acquired in January of this year in the deal that sent Randy Johnson to the Yankees, told MLB.com through an email that he wants the trade for "family and personal reasons." The righthander went 11-15 with a 4.42 ERA in 33 starts in 2005, but it was a rollercoaster season for Vazquez. He went 7-4 with a 4.30 ERA in his first 14 assignments of the year, but went 4-11 over his last 19 starts. If the Diamondbacks can't trade Vazquez by March 15, then he could become a free agent, but that would void the last two years of his contract at about $24 million. Selected by the Montreal Expos in the fifth round of the 1994 amateur draft, Vazquez has compiled an 89-93 record with a 4.28 ERA in 257 games, including one relief appearance. He was traded by the Expos to the Yankees in December of 2003 and then inked a four-year, $45 million contract, which expires after the 2007 season.
