Carl Edwards captured Saturday afternoon's Arizona 200 Busch Series event at the Phoenix International Raceway. The No.60 Roush Racing Ford crossed the finish line 0.246 seconds ahead of runner-up Clint Bowyer.
The victory was Edwards' fifth of the season and fifth of his Busch career.
"That was a race, that was fun," said Edwards. "That was the best race I've ever been in."
Edwards brought the 43-car field to the green flag for 200 laps racing but couldn't lead the first lap. That honor went to Denny Hamlin who used the outside lane to perfection and grabbed the lead at the end of first lap.
Hamlin, who also won the Nextel Cup pole earlier in the day, kept the top spot for 40 laps before yielding it.
On the early charge towards the leaders was Bowyer, who started a disappointing 32nd, but was up to the 19th position by lap 10. He kept moving forward and was 12th on lap 40. Then, on his first pit stop, the team was slow getting him out and he was forced to restart in 18th position.
Edwards took over the lead and quickly opened up a one-second lead while Hamlin and Kevin Harvick fought over second place. Harvick got the position and went after Edwards.
At the mid-point, Edwards still led the race, by 2.157 seconds over Harvick. In the "race within the race" between defending champion Martin Truex Jr. and challenger Bowyer, Truex Jr. started fourth and was still in that position while Bowyer cracked the top-10 for the first time on lap 82 and halfway through the event was ninth.
Edwards was setting a blazing pace and with a long green-flag segment through the middle of the race passed Stacy Compton to leave just 19 cars on the lead lap.
A debris caution on lap 109 sent all the leaders to pit lane. Edwards was first off pit lane to stay ahead of Harvick and Truex Jr.
But Harvick didn't let him get away this time and on lap 130 took the lead for the first time. Kenseth got by Edwards as well, but was more than one second behind Harvick with 50 laps to go.
With 40 laps to go, Truex Jr. was stuck in fourth place, but Bowyer was now up to fifth place. Bowyer, on the inside, got side-by-side with Truex Jr. but couldn't complete the pass and settled behind him.
A debris caution with 25 laps to go allowed teams to pit one last time for fresh tires and fuel.
Harvick's crew beat Edwards off pit lane for the lead and while Bowyer couldn't beat Truex Jr. on the track, his crew did the job for him and he re- entered the race in third place with 21 laps remaining.
Edwards immediately went to the bottom of the track and grabbed the lead from Harvick. The No.21 Chevrolet tried a crossover move on Edwards, but it didn't work an Harvick was settled into second.
Meanwhile Bowyer was behind both of them watching the action with no place to go. Finally, Harvick slid a little high and Bowyer got past him for second place.
Bowyer was now right on Edwards' bumper as the drivers hit the 190-lap mark. The No.2 dropped to the bottom of the track and Edwards came down to block. Kenseth got past Harvick and challenged Bowyer for second place.
Bowyer fought him off, but now Edwards had a little breathing room with five laps to go.
Edwards's lead was 0.431 as the drivers saw the white flag and Bowyer couldn't mount a charge. Edwards claimed him fifth win of the season.
"I'm really proud of the guys," said Bowyer. "To come back after that bad pit stop and they got us out there in third place, it got us a chance."
Kenseth, Harvick and Greg Biffle completed the top-five.
Truex Jr. finished sixth, but lost 20 of his 84-point lead (4,791 - 4,727). He only needs to finish 12th or better next week to clinch his second consecutive series title.
The final race of the season is set for Saturday, November 19th at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
