The Baltimore Orioles will not bring back Rafael Palmeiro or Sammy Sosa, two big-name players who were big-time disappointments in 2005.
"At this point, we are heading in a different direction," Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan told The Baltimore Sun.
Palmeiro endured a rough season after collecting his 3,000th career hit in July. First, he was suspended for 10 days following a positive drug test and then saw his playing time diminish upon his return. He was eventually told not to return to the team late in the season.
The first baseman, who filed for free agency, batted .266 with 18 home runs and 60 RBI in 2005. He is one of just four players in major league history with 3,000 hits and 500 homers.
Sosa, meanwhile, was a disappointment mostly on the field, batting just .221 with 14 homers and 45 RBI in just 102 games with Baltimore in 2005. Sosa, also a free agent, was acquired by the Orioles in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, but battled injuries throughout the year.
He has 588 career home runs, leaving him 12 short of the 600 plateau.
