Stribling announces retirement

Mississippi Valley State University announced the retirement of legendary men's basketball coach Lafayette Stribling. Stribling, who will step down on June 30, is the winningest coach in school history, compiling a 315-307 record in 22 years at the helm of the Delta Devils. MVSU finished just 13-15 during the 2004-05 campaign, but went 11-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. "The entire Mississippi Valley State University family applauds coach Stribling for his 20-plus years of service to our institution," said MVSU president Dr. Lester C. Newman. "What coach Stribling has done for our athletics program, as well as the university in general, is phenomenal. Not only is he the winningest coach in MVSU basketball history, but he has touched the lives of so many young students during his tenure here. We accept his decision to retire at this time, but we know that we'll miss having him as an employee at our university." During Stribling's tenure, the Delta Devils captured four SWAC regular-season titles and earned three trips to the NCAA Tournament (1986, 1992, 1996). "Coach Stribling is a true legend," said athletic director Lonza Hardy Jr. "When you think of Valley basketball, you automatically think of coach Stribling. He took over a little heard of program in 1983 and elevated it into a respected national power. His winning ways has made him a college basketball icon." There is speculation that Stribling will take over the head coaching position at Tougaloo College in Jackson, MS.
